Not long to go until record council tax increases come into effect but there is fury among some older people over the extent to which the extra tax will eat up state pension increases they get at the same time.
Now a group of pensioners from Devon is threatening to go to prison rather than pay the tax rises their council is demanding.
The Devon Pensioners Action Forum, which has 450 members, is part of a nationwide campaign against council tax hikes. The chairman of the group has said, “We have taken legal advice and would rather go to jail than accept this outrageous increase.”
The basic state pension for single pensioners will rise by £1.95 and for married couples £3.10.
In Devon the council tax will increase by over 18% so in effect they are being given £1.95 pension increase and being asked for double that in extra council tax!
A Senior Citizens Forum in Shropshire is also considering taking action.
One pensioner has had a letter from the Government saying that some of the extra tax was to be used to cover the cost of council employees taking early retirement!
